About Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums:
Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums (IINRG) (formerly Indian Lac Research Institute (ILRI)) is a nodal Institute at national level for research and development on all aspects of lac and other natural gums & resins (excluding production) such as harvesting/ tapping, processing, product development, training, information repository, technology dissemination and national/international cooperation. Realizing the strategic importance of lac, the then Imperial Govt. of India constituted the Lindsay- Harlow Committee in 1920, to look into all aspects of the country’s lac trade and its development. On the suggestions of this Committee, lac merchants organized themselves into the Indian Lac Association for Research, under the aegis of which, the foundation stone of Indian Lac Research Institute (ILRI) was laid at Ranchi on September 20,1924. Subsequently, on the recommendation of the Royal Commission on Agriculture, the Indian Lac Cess Committee (ILCC) was constituted, which took over the reigns of the ILRI on August 1, 1931.The ILCC also organized and maintained the London Shellac Research Bureau, UK and Shellac Research Bureau and Polytechnique Institute of Brooklyn, USA. As a result of reorganization of agricultural research and education in the country, the ICAR took over the administrative control of the ILRI from April 1, 1966. This is one of the oldest Institutes within ICAR, having completed 84 years of fruitful service to the nation. The institute mandate has been expanded in the year 2007 to look after important issues related to all natural resins & gums of Indian origin. Accordingly ILRI has been renamed as Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums (IINRG). The Institute is known by this name since Sept.20, 2007. Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums comprises of three divisions namely Lac Production Division (LPD), Process and Product Development Division (PPD) and Transfer of Technology Division (TOT). Lac Production Division deals with the production aspects of lac exclusively which involves research in insect improvement as well as host plants. Development of sustainable lac production technologies for the farmers. The Division maintains a Lac host and Lac insect gene bank. The Biotechnology laboratory of Lac Production Division is actively engaged in research on characterization and selection of lac insect genetic stocks and host plant germplasms through molecular approach with an aim to select best productive and qualitative lac insects and host plants. The Process and Product Development Division came into existence with the expanded mandate of the Institute. It deals with Natural Resins and Gums, refinement in processing, value addition technologies for raw, semi-refined and finished natural resins & gums and their by-products to pilot scale production. The Division has a ISO 9001 QUALITY EVALUATION LAB. The Quality Evaluation Laboratory of IINRG is IS/ISO 9001:2008 accredited laboratory to render services for collection, analysis, testing and reporting of lac and lac based products. Processing and Demonstration Unit of the Division has few pilot plants for research, refinement, training and demonstration on important products. These are used for entrepreneurship development. Transfer of Technology Division Technology is involved in assessment, refinement and dissemination for a wider adoption of research findings. It is a centre for training and education on all aspects of lac and processing and product developments from natural gums and resins. Lac museum of the Division is a unique museum in the world dedicated to lac and its uses. The museum depicts all aspects of lac right from cultivation, lac insect predators, its uses, lac by-products, etc. Samples of lac from all over the world collected are exhibited for the visitors. Besides these the Divisions conducts regular training programme for the farmers, Un- employed rural youth Intermediate or graduates and nominee of GOs & NGOs.
