About Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS)
The Centre
The Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) was established as an autonomous body registered under the Societies Act in the year 1980, by the State Government. Appreciating its role in the promotion of research and training, the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) recognized it as a national institute in the year 1986 and included CESS in its network of institutions for annual grant. The Centre has been receiving maintenance grants from the State Government and the ICSSR and project –specific grants/consultancies from the state government, central government, Planning Commission, Asian Development Bank, World Bank, IRC, Netherlands, TATA Trust, UNICEF, Ford Foundation, European Union and other International Organizations.
The Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) has been registered under Section 6(1) (a) of the foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act 1976 which enables the Centre to accept contributions from the external agencies for carrying out research work. The CESS has also been approved by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Ministry of Science and Technology and the Director General of Income Tax (Exemptions), Calcutta under the rule 6 of the Income Tax Rules for the purpose of Section 35 (1) (iii) of the Income Tax Act 1961.
The Campus
The Centre is situated in the heart of Hyderabad, about 3 K.M. from Begumpet Airport. The Centre is housed in the 5 acre campus given by Osmania University in the premises of the Nizamiah Observatory at Begumpet. The main building has an administrative wing, faculty rooms, seminar rooms, lecture halls, a cartographic laboratory and computer and data-processing unit. There are also separate buildings Auditorium, Seminar hall, Visiting Faculty quarters, Library and the Guest house. There is a canteen which caters to the campus community and guests. The canteen offers simple meals at moderate rates.
Academic and Teaching Activities
The CESS has been recognized as a Centre for advanced research by the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University and the Osmania University. It has also been recognized by the University of Hyderabad as Research Centre for external registration for Ph.D programs in Economics and Anthropology. The Centre has evolved a unique teaching–cum-research training programme leading to M.Phil and Ph.D in development Studies. Both are part time programs undertaken in collaboration with the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University. The selection process for M.Phil comprises a written examination followed by an interview, whereas for Ph.D the selection will be done on the basis of the Oral test.
Ph.D Research
The Centre has so far admitted 14 batches of Ph.D scholars. Twenty-five Scholars have been awarded the Ph.D degree by the Dr. B. R Ambedkar Open University. A few research scholars are offered doctoral fellowships funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) as well as by the Centre.
M. Phil Research
The Centre has till now admitted 19 batches of M.Phil students. The students admitted for M.Phil have to undertake a research study as part fulfillment of their M.Phil degree. So far 90 scholars completed their dissertations under the supervision of the faculty and were awarded the M.Phil degrees by the Dr. B. R . Ambedkar Open University.
