Mirror defines itself
In this poem the mirror is itself the speaker. It says that it is silver and exact. It has no romantic preconceptions. Whatever it looks at, it absorbs within itself. Or whosoever looks at it, is absorbed within it. There is nothing like love or hatred in it. The mirror is neither cruel, nor indifferent. It is only truthful. It has four corners. In its characteristics, it can be called the eye of the little god.
Its place in the house
The place of the mirror is the wall on which it hangs. The wall has grown pink and speck¬led like it with times. The wall has become a part of the mirror. But faces and darkness separate both of them.
Woman’s reaction in looking at it
When the woman looks into it, she searches for what she once had been in her youth. That way the mirror is like a lake. But the mirror reflects back what she has become at present. She starts weeping over her lost youth and beauty. She sheds a few tears and moves her hands in sadness. She looks each morning into the mirror to see herself. She, in fact, searches her beauty of young age in it. In that instant faces and darkness separate the wall from the mirror.
Woman’s conclusion about herself
That woman has grown into an old woman from a young girl once. She rises towards her day like a terrible fish. It means that she recognises that she is no longer young and beautiful and feels sad.
