Fractions In English
1. A fraction is a numerical value that represents a part of a whole. It can also represent any number of equal parts.
2. It helps us understand portions of something or the division of a quantity into equal parts.
Representation:
Fractions are typically written in the form a/b, where:
a is the numerator, indicating the number of equal parts being considered.
b is the denominator, representing the total number of equal parts in the whole.
Examples:
1. \( \frac{1}{2} \): This means “one out of two” and represents one half of a whole, like one slice of a pie cut into two equal slices.
2. \( \frac{3}{4} \): This means “three out of four” and represents three quarters of a whole, like three slices of a cake cut into four equal slices.
3. \( \frac{5}{8} \): This means “five out of eight” and represents five eighths of a whole, like five slices of bread cut into eight equal slices.
Types of Fractions:
1. Proper Fraction: When the numerator is smaller than the denominator (For example, \( \frac{1}{2} \), \( \frac{3}{4} \) and so on).
2. Improper Fraction: When the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator, It is always the same or greater than the whole. (For example, \( \frac{5}{4} \), \( \frac{4}{4} \) and so on).
3. Unit Fraction: In which the numerator is 1 are known as unit fractions. (For example, \( \frac{1}{4} \), \( \frac{1}{7} \), \( \frac{1}{9} \), and so on.)
4. Mixed Number: A combination of a whole number and a proper fraction (For example, \( 1 \frac{1}{2} \)). where 1 is the whole number and \( \frac{1}{2} \) is the proper fraction.
