Homonyms in English

Definition:

Homonyms are words that have the same spelling or pronunciation but have different meanings. They can be classified into two categories:

  1. Homographs – Words that are spelled the same but have different meanings, and possibly different pronunciations.Example: lead (to guide) and lead (a type of metal).
  2. Homophones – Words that are pronounced the same but have different meanings and spellings.Example: bare (without covering) and bear (the animal).

  1. Aural – The aural experience of the concert was impressive.
    Oral – She practices good oral hygiene.
  2. Bare – The ground was bare after the snow melted.
    Bear – The bear roared loudly in the forest.
  3. Bark – The bark of the tree was rough.
