1. Find from the lesson, the antonyms of the following.

2. Fill in the blanks choosing the appropriate word/idiom from the lesson.
(a) The detective solved the mysterious crime.

3. Using the following points frame a character sketch of the narrator. Support each character trait with instances from the lesson.
(1) Diffident and timid
- The narrator feels nervous and hesitant as soon as he enters the bank.
- Instance: “The moment I cross the threshold of a bank I am a hesitating jay.”
(2) Unusual behaviour
- He acts strangely by asking to see the manager “alone” without reason.
- Instance: “Can I see the manager?’ I said, and added solemnly, ‘alone.'”
(3) Ignorant about banking
- He doesn’t know the proper process and mistakenly steps into the safe.
- Instance: “‘Good morning,’ I said, and stepped into the safe.”
(4) Nervous and careless
- He writes the wrong amount (fifty-six instead of six) on the cheque due to nervousness.
- Instance: “I realised that I had written fifty-six instead of six.”
(5) Economical
- He plans to save money by depositing fifty dollars monthly.
- Instance: “I propose to deposit fifty-six dollars now, and fifty dollars a month regularly.”
4. Rewrite the following in indirect speech.
(a) I asked if I could see the manager, and the accountant replied that I certainly could.
(b) I said “Good morning” and stepped into the safe; the manager coldly told me to come out.
(c) The words seemed to imply that we should do this painful thing while the fit was on us.
(d) He asked in surprise if I was drawing it all out again, and I replied that yes, I was withdrawing the whole thing.
(e) He asked how I would have it, and I replied that I wanted it in fifties.
5. Read the statement, write your views first, and counterview later, in two separate passages.
‘Online/Net Banking is better than going personally to the bank for transactions.’
Views:
Online banking is more convenient because it saves time and effort. You can transfer money, pay bills, or check your balance from home using a phone or computer. There’s no need to travel or wait in long queues at the bank. It’s also available 24/7, so you can do transactions anytime, unlike bank hours. For example, depositing money through an app is faster than filling out forms at a branch.
Counterview:
Going to the bank in person is better because it feels safer and more reliable. Some people don’t trust online systems due to hacking or technical issues. At the bank, you can talk to staff if there’s a problem, like the narrator in the story faced. Physical banking also helps those who aren’t good with technology, like older people. For big transactions, meeting someone face-to-face gives more confidence than a screen.
