4. (d) The Greeks burnt their tents and sailed away.

5. Form pairs. Imagine you are a pair of Trojans and you have come to know about Odysseus’s plan. Make a counter plan to defeat the Greeks. Write down your plan as you would explain it to your fellow Trojans.
- “Fellow Trojans, we’ve learned the Greeks plan to trick us with a giant wooden horse. They’ll hide men inside, pretend to leave, and attack us at night. Here’s our counter plan:
- First, don’t bring the horse inside our walls, no matter what they say.
- Second, set guards to watch it all day and night.
- Third, prepare torches and spears to burn it down if anyone comes out.
- Fourth, keep our army ready near the gates to fight if the Greeks return.
This way, we’ll stay safe and defeat their cunning trick!”
6. Identify one example of a main clause and one example of a dependent clause from page 46. (Read the entry regarding clause in the Language Study pages.)
- Main Clause:
- “Troy was filled with the sight of leaping flames and the sound of shouting and the noise of weapons and the cries of weeping women.”
- Explanation: This is a complete sentence that can stand alone, expressing a full idea.
- Dependent Clause:
- “When King Menelaus rushed through the city, looking for her and found her in her palace.”
- Explanation: This clause cannot stand alone as it begins with “When” and depends on the main clause “She hung her head in shame and sorrow” to make sense.
7. Be a writer.
(a) Now read the beginning and end of a sci-fi story given below and complete the story using your imagination.
‘The Magic Glasses’ After ten years of diligent experimenting on ‘light’, Jayant, a brilliant scientist, created a pair of eye-glasses which would enable him to see through all opaque objects, doors, walls, metal structures etc. On Monday, he put on his ‘magic’ glasses and stepped into the busy street outside… And so, Jayant received the ‘State Award for Brave Citizens’.
- Completed Story:
- After ten years of diligent experimenting on ‘light’, Jayant, a brilliant scientist, created a pair of eye-glasses which would enable him to see through all opaque objects, doors, walls, metal structures etc.
- On Monday, he put on his ‘magic’ glasses and stepped into the busy street outside.
- At first, he was amazed to see people’s hidden lives-shopkeepers counting money behind counters, children hiding toys in their bags, and drivers texting in their cars.
- But then, he noticed something alarming: a group of men in a locked van, holding strange devices that looked like bombs.
- With his glasses, he saw through the van’s walls and realized they were planning to attack the crowded market.
- Jayant quickly ran to a nearby police station, using his glasses to guide officers through shortcuts, seeing past buildings to avoid traffic.
- The police trusted his urgency, followed him, and caught the men just as they opened the van doors.
- The bombs were safely removed, and the market was saved from disaster.
- People cheered for Jayant, calling him a hero for his quick thinking and strange invention.
- And so, Jayant received the ‘State Award for Brave Citizens’.
(b) Read the following and observe the use of tenses.
‘Last week I witnessed a strange accident. Let me tell you about it. The signal flashes green. Vehicles start from the opposite direction. They move fast. Suddenly a speeding motorcyclist tries to cut across, from the wrong side. He is about to collide with a loaded truck. He applies the brakes. He falls and slides out with his bike from under the truck. He comes out unscathed on the other side.’
- When an event, which has occurred in the past, is narrated in the Present Tense to create a dramatic effect its Tense is called the ‘Dramatic Present Tense.’
- Now try to relate Jayant’s sci-fi story, in brief, in the dramatic past tense.
- Jayant’s Story in Dramatic Past Tense:
- After years of work, Jayant crafts his magic glasses and steps into the street.
- He peers through walls and spots danger-a gang hides bombs in a van.
- He races to the police, guides them past obstacles, and points out the threat.
- The officers rush in, nab the culprits, and stop the attack just in time.
- The crowd cheers, and Jayant earns his award for bravery.
