Somebody’s Mother
ENGLISH WORKSHOP
1. Pick out lines from the poem that help create images of the following in our mind and write them in the table.
No. | Old Woman | The Street | Schoolboys |
---|---|---|---|
1. | The woman was old and ragged and gray | The streets were white with a recent snow | Came happy boys, like a flock of sheep |
2. | And bent with the chill of a winter’s day | Should trample her down in the slippery street | Glad in the freedom of ‘school let out’ |
3. | Her aged hand on his strong young arm | At the crowded crossing she waited long | Hailing the snow piled white and deep |
2. Write at least 5 rhymes from the poem.
- Gray – Day (Lines 1-2)
- Snow – Slow (Lines 3-4)
- By – Eye (Lines 7-8)
- Shout – Out (Lines 11-12)
- Low – Go (Lines 23-24)
3. Give, in your own words, TWO reasons for each of the following:
(a) The woman was reluctant to cross the street by herself.
- She was old and weak, so she couldn’t move fast.
- The street was slippery and crowded, making her scared of falling.
(b) The schoolboys were in a happy mood.
- School was over, so they were free to play.
- The snow was fresh and deep, which excited them.
(c) One of the schoolboys helped the old woman cross the street.
- He felt kind and wanted to help someone in need.
- He thought about his own mother and hoped someone would help her too.
(d) We must help those who are in need.
- Helping others makes the world a better place for everyone.
- One day, we might need help too, and kindness comes back to us.
4. Think and write in 5-6 lines, why most of the people on a road/street ignore those in need of help. What about you? Write about your feelings after you have helped/not helped, when needed.
- Many people ignore those in need because they are busy with their own lives.
- Some think it’s not their job to help strangers.
- Others are scared to get involved or don’t notice the problem.
- I feel happy and proud when I help someone, like I’ve done something good.
- If I don’t help, I feel guilty and wish I had done something.
- Helping makes me feel connected to others, but not helping leaves me sad.
