The Storyteller
1. Story Basics
- The story is about a hot afternoon train journey.
The passengers are:
- An aunt
- Two small girls
- A small boy (Cyril)
- A bachelor (a man traveling alone)
- The aunt is trying to keep the children quiet but struggles.
- The children keep asking “Why?” and annoy the aunt.
2. The Aunt’s Story
- The aunt tells a boring story about a good little girl.
- The children don’t like the story. They think it’s stupid.
- The bachelor (the man) doesn’t think the aunt is a good storyteller.
3. The Bachelor’s Story
- The bachelor tells a story about an “extraordinarily good” girl named Bertha.
- Bertha is very well-behaved and wins medals for it.
- The Prince allows her to walk in his park as a reward.
- The park has no flowers because the animals ate them.
- A wolf comes into the park.
- Bertha hides from the wolf, but the sound of her medals gives her away.
- The wolf catches and eats Bertha.
- The children love the bachelor’s story!
4. Why the Stories Are Different
- The aunt’s story is boring and predictable.
- The bachelor’s story is interesting because it’s unexpected and has a surprising (and slightly dark) ending.
5. What We Learn
- The story shows how hard it can be to keep children entertained.
- It also suggests that sometimes, stories that break the rules can be more enjoyable.
