(1) Kanhoji Angre – Kanhoji Angre was the chief of the Maratha navy. He controlled the Konkan coast and fought against foreign powers like the Portuguese and the British.
(2) The Battle of Palkhed – This battle was fought in 1728 between Bajirao I and the Nizam. Bajirao defeated the Nizam near Aurangabad, making him accept the Maratha right to collect Chauthai and Sardeshmukhi.
(3) Balaji Vishwanath – Balaji Vishwanath was the first Peshwa of Shahu Maharaj. He strengthened Shahu’s rule and brought many Maratha Sardars under his leadership.
(4) Bajirao I – Bajirao I was the greatest Maratha Peshwa. He expanded the Maratha Empire towards the North, won the Battle of Bhopal, and fought against the Mughals and Portuguese.
4. Give reasons.
(1) Two separate Maratha States were formed.
- After Shahu Maharaj and Maharani Tarabai fought for the throne, two separate Maratha states were formed – one in Satara (Shahu) and one in Kolhapur (Tarabai).
(2) Azamshah released Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj from his custody.
- Azamshah believed that releasing Shahu would create a conflict between Shahu and Tarabai, weakening the Maratha power.
(3) Delhi needed the help of the Marathas.
- The Mughal empire was weak due to wars, invaders, and internal fights. The Marathas were strong, so Delhi needed their support.
