1. What is History?
- History tells us about past events, people, and places.
- We learn about ancient times through various sources.
- These sources help us understand how people lived, what they did, and how society developed.
2. Sources of History
History is based on three types of sources:
- Material Sources
- Written Sources
- Oral Sources
(1) Material Sources of History
Material sources are objects or structures from the past that help us study history.
Examples:
- Monuments – Forts, palaces, temples, caves
- Inscriptions – Writings on stone, metal, or clay
- Coins – Help us understand the economy and rulers
- Pottery and Tools – Show how people lived and worked
(2) Written Sources of History
These are documents or books written by people in the past.
Examples:
- Manuscripts – Handwritten books on palm leaves or paper
- Inscriptions – Writings on walls, stones, or metal plates
- Biographies and Chronicles – Life stories of kings and important people
- Official Records – Government documents, letters, and accounts
(3) Oral Sources of History
These are stories, songs, or traditions passed down from one generation to another.
Examples:
- Folk Tales – Stories about past events and heroes
- Songs and Ballads – Songs describing battles and victories
- Legends and Myths – Ancient stories that explain history

- Sources help us reconstruct the past.
