Preamble to the Constitution
Introduction
- The Constitution is the supreme law of India that sets the framework for governance.

- The Preamble is the introduction to the Constitution. It explains its objectives and principles.
What is the Preamble?
- The Preamble is like the preface of a book, introducing the Constitution’s goals.
- It lays down the ideals that guide our nation and governance.
- The Preamble states that India is a:
- Sovereign State
- Socialist State
- Secular State
- Democratic State
- Republic
Key Features of the Preamble
1. Sovereign State
- India gained independence from British rule on 15th August 1947.
- Being sovereign means India is free from external control.
- The government has full authority to make decisions for the country.
- In a democracy, sovereignty lies with the people, who elect representatives to govern.
2. Socialist State
- A socialist country works towards reducing economic inequality.
- It ensures that the rich and poor have fair access to resources.
- Wealth and resources should not be concentrated in the hands of a few people.
- Everyone should have equal opportunities for economic progress.
3. Secular State
- Secularism means that all religions are treated equally.
- The government does not promote or support any one religion.
- Citizens have the freedom to practice any religion or not follow any religion.
- The government ensures no discrimination based on religion.
Example of Secularism in India
- In India, people of different religions celebrate their festivals freely.
- The government does not interfere in religious matters but ensures that religious activities do not disturb public order.
4. Democratic State
- Democracy means that power belongs to the people.
- People elect their representatives through elections.
- The government makes laws and policies for the welfare of the people.
- Elections are held regularly to choose new representatives.
How Democracy Works in India
- Elections are held every 5 years.
- All citizens above 18 years can vote (Universal Adult Franchise).
- The elected representatives take decisions for the country in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies.
5. Republic
- India is a republic because all public positions are elected and not inherited.
- In a monarchy (like in some countries), rulers inherit power from their family.
- In India, positions like President, Prime Minister, Chief Minister, and Mayor are elected by the people.
Important Values in the Preamble
1. Justice
Justice means fairness and equality for all.The Preamble guarantees three types of justice:
- Social Justice – No discrimination based on caste, religion, gender, or language.
- Economic Justice – Equal opportunities for earning and economic security.
- Political Justice – Everyone has the right to vote and participate in governance.
2. Liberty (Freedom)
- Liberty means freedom to express opinions and follow beliefs.
- Citizens should be free from unnecessary restrictions.
- The Preamble ensures:
- Freedom of thought and expression
- Freedom of belief, faith, and worship
- Freedom to follow any religion
Example of Liberty in Daily Life
- People can freely express their opinions in newspapers or on social media.

4. Fraternity (Brotherhood)
- Fraternity means a sense of unity and brotherhood among citizens.

How Fraternity is Promoted
- Celebrating national festivals like Independence Day and Republic Day together.
- Respecting different cultures, traditions, and opinions.
