Question Answers For All Chapters – General Science Class 6
Motion and Types of Motion
Exercise
1. Identify the types of motion:
(a) Movement of the earth around the sun: Circular Motion
(b) Movement of a ceiling fan: Circular Motion
(c) A meteor falling from the sky: Linear Motion
(d) A rocket launched from the ground: Linear Motion
(e) A fish swimming in water: Random Motion
(f) The plucked string of a sitar: Oscillatory Motion
2. Fill in the blanks:
(a) If a ball is released from the terrace of a building, it comes down in linear motion. On the other hand, it reaches the ground in non-linear motion if it is thrown with force away from the terrace in a direction parallel to the terrace.
(b) The motion of an aeroplane on the runway before take-off is linear motion.
(c) The kite looking for its prey flies with random motion in the sky.
(d) Children sitting in a rotating giant wheel have circular motion, while those sitting in a merry-go-round have a circular motion.
3. How are we different?
(a) Oscillatory motion and linear motion:
Answer – Oscillatory motion moves back and forth (e.g., the swing of a clock pendulum).
Linear motion moves in a straight line (e.g., a car moving on a road).
(b) Linear motion and random motion:
Answer – Linear motion follows a straight path (e.g., a moving train).
Random motion has no fixed direction (e.g., a butterfly flying in a garden).
(c) Random motion and oscillatory motion:
Answer – Random motion has no fixed pattern (e.g., a crawling baby).
Oscillatory motion moves back and forth in a fixed path (e.g., a swing).
4. Explain in your own words with examples:
Answer – (a) Linear Motion: Motion in a straight line. Example: A moving car on a highway.
(b) Oscillatory Motion: Back-and-forth movement. Example: A pendulum in a clock.
(c) Circular Motion: Moving in a circular path. Example: A fan rotating.
(d) Random Motion: No fixed path or direction. Example: A butterfly flying.
(e) Periodic Motion: Motion that repeats in a fixed time. Example: The movement of the hands of a clock.
5 Answer the following questions in your own words.
(a) Which types of motion are seen in birds flying in the sky?
Answer – Birds in the sky show linear motion when flying straight, oscillatory motion when flapping their wings, and random motion when changing directions.
(b) Write about your experience of various types of motion while riding a bicycle on a road.
Answer – While riding a bicycle, the wheels show circular motion.
If I ride straight, it is linear motion.
If I move on a curved road, it is non-linear motion.
If I speed up or slow down, it is non-uniform linear motion.
6. Complete the puzzle using words for types of motion:
(1) A spring is stretched and one end is released: Oscillatory Motion
(2) A minute hand: Circular Motion
(3) A see-saw: Oscillatory Motion
(4) Children in a march past: Linear Motion
(5) A stone rolling down a hillside: Linear Motion
