1. Answer the following questions :
(a) Where does the story take place ?
Answer : The story takes place in a village where a few small cottages stand close to each other.
(b) List the characters in the play and write one or two lines about each.
Answer : Traveller: A smart and clever person who tricks the villagers into sharing food.
Motiram: A selfish villager who doesn’t want to share his food with strangers.
Sonabai: A cunning woman who pretends not to hear the traveller’s request.
Hirabai: A villager who avoids helping by speaking in a confusing way.
Rupabai: A kind woman who first says she has no food but later helps the traveller.
(c) How do the following avoid giving anything to the traveller ?

Answer : Motiram: Says dinner is over and shuts the door rudely.
Sonabai: Pretends not to hear and changes the word “food” to “wood.”
Hirabai: Speaks in gibberish (words written backward) to confuse the traveller.
Rupabai: Says her food storage is empty but later helps the traveller.
(d) Find what Hirabai tells the traveller by reading her words from right to left.
Answer : Hirabai actually says:
- “Go away. No food and no rest for anyone here.”
- “Good. I do not want you to. Go elsewhere.”
(e) Apart from the stone, how many things go into the soup ?
Answer : Apart from the stone, the soup contains potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, beans, onions, ginger, salt, and pepper—a total of 8 ingredients.
(f) Does the traveller really have a magic stone ?
Answer : No, the traveller does not have a magic stone. He tricks the villagers into adding food to the soup, making them share what they had.

4. Write a recipe for the stone soup.
Answer : Ingredients:
A pot of water, a stone, peeled potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, beans, onions, a piece of ginger, salt, pepper, and some kindness in the hearts of the people who make it.
How to make it:
Drop a stone into the pot of water.
Boil the water.
Add a few peeled potatoes and stir.
Add tomatoes and plenty of carrots and stir again.
Add beans, onions, ginger, and stir.
Add salt, pepper, and serve hot.
5. Form pairs. Write at least one short dialogue for each of the following expressions.
(a) I agree. (b) True ! (c) You are right. (d) Why not ? (To mean that something can be done.) (e) Thank you.

B: I agree! It’s really delicious.

A: Helping others makes us happy.

A: Sharing food is better than keeping it all to ourselves.

B: Why not? Go ahead.

A: Here, have some extra soup.
B: Thank you! It looks tasty.
6. Find the meaning of ‘Charity begins at home’. Find other sayings which have a similar meaning.
Answer : Meaning: This means that people should first take care of their own family and close ones before helping others.
