(a) What is described in the poem?
Answer : The poem describes clothes hanging on a clothesline, fluttering in the wind.

Answer : The clothes are compared to:

- Fairy-tale witches that dance wildly.
(c) What do restive horses do?
Answer : Restive horses leap, skip, and move about in a playful and energetic manner.
(d) What do fairy-tale witches do?
Answer : Fairy-tale witches dance wildly and move unpredictably.
(e) What did one of the fluttering creatures do?
Answer : One of the fluttering clothes (a handkerchief) struggled free from the pegs and flew away.
(f) What could have happened to the one who flew away? Who was she?
Answer : The one that flew away could be lost in a ditch or drowned in the sea. She was the poet’s handkerchief.

(a) Why are the clothes compared to living things ?
Answer : The clothes are compared to living things because they move, dance, and flutter in the wind as if they are alive.
(b) The events described in the poem take place at a certain place, at a certain period of the year, under specific weather conditions. Describe the place, the time and the weather conditions.
Answer : Place: An outdoor clothesline.
Time: A windy day in March.
Weather: Windy, with strong breezes making the clothes move.

One windy day, a white handkerchief was hung on a clothesline to dry. As the wind blew stronger, it struggled against the pegs holding it. Finally, it broke free and started flying like a bird. It soared high in the sky, flipping and flapping. The wind carried it far away, and no one could find it. It might have landed in a garden, floated in a river, or disappeared forever.
