Param Vir Chakra : Our Heroes
What is Param Vir Chakra?
Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is India’s highest military award.
It is given for great bravery and courage in war.
The award is very rare and has been given only 21 times.
14 of these awards were given after the soldier’s death (posthumously).
2. Description of the Medal
The medal is made of bronze.
It has a purple ribbon.
On the front side (obverse), it has the Indian national emblem surrounded by four ‘Indra’s Vajra’ symbols.
On the back side (reverse), the words “Param Vir Chakra” are written in Hindi and English, with two lotus flowers.
It was designed by Savitribai Khanolkar, who was originally from Europe but became an Indian citizen.
3. Story of Sage Dadhichi
A demon had stolen all the water in the world.
The demon could not be defeated by normal weapons.
Sage Dadhichi had powerful bones, so he sacrificed his life.
A weapon called ‘Indra’s Vajra’ was made from his bones.
Using this weapon, the demon was defeated.
Similarly, Indian soldiers sacrifice their lives for the country’s safety.

5. Story of Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon
In 1971, the enemy attacked Srinagar Airfield.
Even though the enemy planes were stronger, he bravely fought them.
He shot down two enemy planes.
He saved the airfield and Srinagar city.
Sadly, his plane crashed, and he lost his life.
He showed great courage and love for the country.

Learn and share stories about their bravery.
Respect and support the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
